Critics Consensus:The Fault In Our Stars

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is the all new movie based off of the hit John Green novel, The Fault In Our Stars!!
Back in 2011 a little book came out called The Fault In Our Stars. It was written by John Green who had made plenty of teenage romance books before that had lots of charm and wit but sadly never really enough commercial success. And then The Fault In Our Stars happened. It's catch that made it so successful?(If you can call it that) the kids have cancer. Hollywood wouldn't wanna screw up a movie like that right? Right?
Thank the stars yes apparently. Despite having many appearances on horrible cliche networks like MTV critics are saying that this movie has some wonderful pacing,a beautiful soundtrack, and tough emotional moments that are like nothing you have seen in a teenage movie before. Shy away Twilight. This is one film that truly deserves all the acclaim it gets.
Overall see this movie.
The Fault In Our Stars is rated PG-13.

Critics Consensus:Maleficent

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is the all new surprisingly villain themed Disney movie, Maleficent!
Disney's done a lot of experimental things in the past couple of years to shy away from the family friendly theme they've carried for so long. However those movies such as John Carter or Lone Ranger failed to gain any critical or commercial success but what if it was Disney themed this time around? Lets find out in the all new Maleficent.
Unfortunately Maleficent isn't the amazing epic we expected it to be. However it's not that bad as we expected it to be thanks to Angelina Jolies amazing performance with critics such as Salon.com,NPR, and Blackfilm.com praising it and the amazing special effects this movie stays in the cool zone of a little bit better than mediocore. Oh well Disney. You have so much money it doesn't matter how many times you fail apparently.
Overall see this movie if you want to.
Maleficent is rated PG.

Critics Consensus:Palo Alto

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is an all new comedy with Emma Roberts and James Franco based off of the book by none other than James Franco.
James Franco has had a crazy career in books and movies. He's made 4 books and has played roles that have gone from a hiker that has to amputate his arm in a rock shaft and a crazy alien-like rapper in a movie about strippers robbing banks. So now he's going onto the more dramatic side with a movie about teenage highschool drama. Let's find out.
Palo Alto has gotten some great reviews and has even been called a turn stoner for newcomer Emma Roberts career and gripping to a point by numerous critics and has been praised for it's long lasting memorable effect after you see it. However some critics such as New York Observer and Slant Magazine called it boring and filled with tropes. So it's obviously not for everyone but if you're looking for a good indie film you should definitely go see it.
Palo Alto is rated R.

Critics Consensus:Brick Mansions

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is Paul Walkers' final completed film, Brick Mansions!!
Brick Mansions is getting a lot of hype for three reasons all for their actors. RZA is a musician and has never really had a big part in a movie before,David Belle is a celebrity known for his parkour skills, and Paul Walker is known for it being his last completed film after his death in the car crash. But does the hype equal quality? Let's find out.
Unfortunately Brick Mansions has been called dumb, noisy, clunky, and plotless by numerous critics such as Boston Globe,Movie Nation, and The Wrap. It's also been called pretty underwhelming considering the great cast and it being Paul Walker's last film however if you just turn your brain off you'll probably have a good time. Well maybe an average one.
Overall only see this if you want to.
Brick Mansions is rated PG-13.

Critics Consensus:Transcendence

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is the all new Transcendence in which humans go against machines!
While Transcendence's plot may sound generic as a vat of boring it actually has some discernible talent attached to it like Christopher Nolan,Johnny Depp,Morgan Freeman and Rebecca Hall. However all of that is destroyed as the film has a 20% on RottenTomatoes and a 44 on Metacritic. Let's see why this is such a colossal disappointment.
Apparently it's because Transcendence has a lazy script, boring acting, and a otherwise bland lack in direction. It's got some amazing visual effects but even that can't save this sucker of a movie. Too bad for the 100+ million dollar budget of this movie because something like this is probably gonna hurt it. Another hit in Johnny Depp's wallet.
Overall do not see this movie.
Transcendence is rated PG-13.

Critics Consensus:Draft Day

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is the all new football drama starring Kevin Costner!!
There's been a lot of football dramas in the last couple years and pretty much all of them happen inside the field. However the all new Draft Day starring Kevin Costner and Jennifer Garner sometimes not all of the victories happen on the field. Let's see if that's some generic tagline for a generic movie or a actual good movie overall.
Unfortunately Draft Day isn't like Moneyball where it is a good movie even if you don't like the certain sport its about. It's pretty much only for diehard football fans as Movie Guide and Globe and Mail said. Sure it has some good parts with great acting but overall it's dull script holds it back. Looks like this movie never scored a touchdown. Only a running pass
Overall only see this movie if you want to.
Draft Day is rated PG-13.

Critics Consensus:Cesar Chavez

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is the all new Cesar Chavez movie!
If you took a glance at the poster of Cesar Chavez you would think it would be amazing. It looks like it has a great cast, and a step in the right direction for auto-biographical movies. However when I looked at the score for Cesar Chavez on RottenTomatoes it hurt to look. It's like they butchered the Cesar Chavez story.
And thats because they did. Sadly, Cesar Chavez has stale acting, effortless direction, and not very dramatic overall for an auto-biographical movie. It's not the worst Lionsgate could do with the Cesar Chavez timeline but with a little bit more production, effort, and less budget constraints, its easy to say that this could have been a movie for the ages.
Overall only see this movie if you really want to. Maybe Matinee it.
Cesar Chavez is rated PG-13.

Critics Consensus:Noah

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is the all new Bible epic Noah!
Religon based movies are usually a hit or a miss. Theres fantastic ones like Ben-Hur and David and Bathsheba and then theres horrible ones like Son Of God,Sodom and Gomorrah and ones that pretty much kill an actors career for being anti-semitic and causing controversy but still making big bucks at the box office Cough (Passion Of The Christ) Cough. Anyway let's check out if Russel Crowe of Robin Hood fame can handle a Bible based epic.
Thankfully Noah isn't the controversial atrocity everyone thought it was going to be for some reason and has actually been praised for it's fantastic acting especially the underrated Emma Watson and it's gripping action. However some critics such as ReelViews, Time Out New York, and Daily Star complained about it being too silly, unbelievable, and long. However a 68 on Metacritic and a 76% on RT cant lie.
Overall see this movie.
Noah is rated PG-13.

Critics Consensus:Veronica Mars

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is the all new Veronica Mars reboot!
Last year all the way back in March, the amazing Kristen Bell wanted a million dollars to reboot Veronica Mars into a movie. If you don't know what that is it's a classic teen murder mystery filled with comedy, suspense, and average teen tropes all sculpted into a 3 season show that was cancelled abruptly. Ever since then fans have been crying to get it back. Let's see if it's the thing that we and them wanted.
Totally. Mostly. At least.  Its got a 62 which is pretty fair and it's gotten 21 positive reviews and 11 mixed reviews. It's got great acting, and  doesn't have the most amazing script but it still has that Veronica Mars charm. It plays like a solid episode of the series as the A.V. Club says and it's probably a good treat for fans unless they spent  too much on that Kickstarter. Except if  they are a Veronica Mars fanatic.
Overall see this movie if you want to.
Veronica Mars is rated PG-13.

Critics Consensus:The Grand Budapest Hotel

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is the all new film from Wes Anderson!
Wes Anderson has now become a household game in indie film making thanks to films like Fantastic Mr Fox and Moonrise Kingdom. Now his new film The Grand Budapest Hotel is out in limited release and it's breaking records once again. Any guesses why?
Well mostly because its probably the first great indie film of the year. It's funny and inventive as Wes Anderson always is and has been praised from such critics as Los Angeles Times,Time Out New York, and The New York Times who all gave it nearly perfect scores due to it's unexpected and downright great script, it's great cinematography and once again small name actors in big great roles. This one's definitely a one to book.
Overall see this movie.
The Grand Budapest Hotel is rated R.

Critics Consensus:300:Rise Of An Empire

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is the all new sequel to 300, 300:Rise On An Empire!
300 was somewhat of a cult classic back when it released in 2006. It wasn't an insanely good movie but the special effects were ahead of it's time and the cool action scenes are to die for. Now the director of such disappointments as Man Of Steel and Sucker Punch returns in the new 300 sequel. And a little news for you. Zack Snyder can't catch a break.
300 is getting mostly negative reviews because it takes place before, during, and after 300 and makes the whole thing very confusing as stated by ReviewsOnTheRun. Unfortunately it's more of the same with cliches on top of other cliches and just feels like a very weak cash-in and could have been a made for DVD film. The film is also repetitive as stated by Film.com which gave it a 0 and the performances are very stale and dumb.
Overall it looks like this one isn't for Sparta.
300:Rise Of An Empire is rated R.

Critics Consensus:Pompeii

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is the all new Pompeii movie!
Pompeii is set to be the big budget setpiece about a historical travesty for Sony and they are betting on it to be the next big blockbuster. However Pompeii is coming out in February typically not a good time critically or commercially so let's see how it is! (Spoiler Alert: It's Crap)
While Pompeii isn't that bad you actually want to take place in Pompeii itself its a rather poor and lazy attempt at a movie due to it's low-name non-famous worse than generic acting as said by the Chicago Reader and Globe And Mail, it's unlikeable characters that make you want to root for the volcano and it's really really cheesy and not well thought out dialogue as stated by Creative Loafing. Oh well. Noone expected this movie to be good anyway.
Overall do not see this movie.
Pompeii is rated PG-13.

Critics Consensus:Valentines Movies

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is all the Valentine's movies that come out this week.
Hey! So this is kind of a last minute thing here. I realized how many Valentines Days movies come out this week so I've decided to cover them all in a quick post and say which ones are worth your time. (if any)
Date & Switch:
The first one is Date & Switch a movie about virgins trying to "score" before prom and then one of them says he's gay. Obviously this isn't your typical Valentines Day movie and this one's only a limited release so let's check if it's actually a movie you should drive a little while to see. Turns out nope. This movie has gotten some positive reviews but mostly it's gotten not so shining ones because of it's uneven pacing, dated script and subject material, and overall somewhat pointless. There is some good aspects though but it's not that spread out in the film and mostly is lacking. Overall no.
Winters Tale:
Winter's Tale is the somewhat Cinderella generic story about some crappy love that spans a century or something. It's a last ditch effort by Warner Bros to get some money this Valentines Day and after the explosion of awesomeness that was The Lego Movie we expect better from them. It's a made for TV movie scrapped together and paper thin and that explains why it's gotten no positive reviews and a 14% on Rotten Tomatoes. Ouch.
Endless Love:
The next one is some Romeo & Juliet type love story with the exact same score as Winter's Tale on Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes. You've got to be kidding me. Im done with this film. It's obvious I don't need to explain any more.
About Last Night:
Finally how long did it take to get to a somewhat decent Valentines movie? About Last Night may turn you off because the commercials feature people having sex in a chicken costume and getting caught and it also has Kevin Hart (who starred in the not so fantastic Ride Along). Believe it or not it's actually a decent romp with funny jokes that will leave you happy this Valentines Day. Or whenever this is being published.
Overall according to critics like Globe and Mail,Entertainment Weekly,Rolling Stone, and Village Voice who have pretty good opinions the only one is About Last Night. Other are pretty crap.
Really crap.

Critics Consensus:The Monuments Men

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is the all new World War 2 epic The Monuments Men!
World War 2 films are always the centrifuge of amazing spectacularity in film whether it be the amazing set pieces, heartbreaking scripts, or deep true acting there's always an intense enriching experience. However a new movie out called The Monuments Men puts a new spin on World War 2. A platoon has to save the paintings, artifacts, sculptures and of course monuments from being blown out before the Nazi's come. But this isn't a regular platoon. This is a platoon starring George Clooney,Matt Damon,Kate Blanchett,Bill Murray and much more.
However all those accomplished and superficial actors don't actually go together to make a great film. ReviewsOnTheRun complained about the premise of the film and making the film feel uncomfortable with not only a harsh story (Human lives are more important than art) but being strung together by cliches such as Kate Blanchett being the French femme-fatale. It's clear that The Monuments Men is nothing special and a 33% on RottenTomatoes and a 52 on Metacritic do not lie.
Overall do not see this movie. It is clearly a waste of time.
The Monuments Men is rated PG-13.

Critics Consensus:Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is the return of Tom Clancy films!
Even though Tom Clancy has passed away (R.I.P) countless movies and games will be made in his honor. We haven't had a Tom Clancy movie in a while and hopefully this marks the triumphant return after his sadly passing let's find out. Also its got Chris Pine.
Thankfully Shadow Recruit isn't one of the more crappy movies that comes out this month although it's not amazing in any particular regard. It's suspenseful and engaging but a tad bit over the top for it too stumble a little. It doesn't but that doesn't mean it's exactly a critical darling with a 61%.
Overall see this movie if you want to.
Jack Ryan:Shadow Recruit is rated PG-13.

Critics Consensus:The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is the all new Ben Stiller movie and it's not Night Of The Museum this time!
Ben Stiller is a wild card. He's had some great and definitely memorable performances such as Tropico Thunder and Greenberg but he's also had some failures (like all of the Night Of The Museum movies) and Tower Hiest. He now returns for a somewhat serious movie about a man escaping a generic life titled The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty. Let's see if it's worth the ticket price.
It's probably worth about half it were basing this on reviews because The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty currently has a 47% on Rotten Tomatoes. This is probably due to it's wild ambitious offerings and odd writing. While it's not a bad thing it's certainly offputting and it might only make you want to see it if you really want to.
Overall see this movie if you want to.
The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty is rated PG.

One Of The Worst:47 Ronin

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is the all new samurai smasher 47 Ronin!
47 Ronin looks like a somewhat fresh and exciting movie. It's a samurai action flick and features a barrage of newcomer directors and actors. It's a risk on Universal's part and it might pay off. But really theres more to 47 Ronin than meets the eye. The movie's had a troubled development cycle and it's finally out with a 12% on RottenTomatoes. Looks like this is the new Battlefield Earth ladies and gentlemen.
While 47 Ronin may look cool it's really just a bore fest. The film is two hours and it definitely feels like it overstays it's welcome as USA Today and Empire have said. This is partly due to the CGI being used overwhelmingly and it just being a movie with no gas left in the engine. This is a stinker and stay away from it as much as possible.
Overall don't see this.
47 Ronin is rated PG-13.

Critics Consensus:The Wolf Of Wall Street

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is the all new Martin Scorcese flick, The Wolf Of Wall Street!
You could say one of Jonah Hill's breakout roles was in Moneyball the baseball drama with Brad Pitt which turned out to be amazing and proved that Jonah Hill can do more than just dick around. Now Jonah Hill is back and he's got a couple of companions including Leonardo Dicaprio and the director,Martin Scorcese. Looks like this is gonna be a marvel.
And no doubt about it The Wolf Of Wall Street is. You may have a few critics such as The New York Post and Charlotte Observer shy away from the movie due to it's three hour runtime but trust us (and the critics) for this one because it's definitely worth the time take. It's filled to the brim with great dialogue lines, a fantastic cast, and a great setting. The Wolf Of Wall Street is definitely one of the best movies of this year and in a while. Believe me on this and if you don't it's gotten 10+ perfect scores as evidence.
Overall see this movie.
The Wolf Of Wall Street is rated R.

Critics Consensus:Her

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today the west Spike Jonze film Her!
Spike Jonze isn't one of the biggest names in the film industry and that's sad really. He's made three incredible movies which are incase you are wondering are (Being John Malkovich,Adaptation, and Where The Wild Things Are) All of those movies are cult classics and critically acclaimed and he now returns with the new Her. And it's downright amazing.
Her is about a man (Theodore Twombly) who is depressed and alone  after a long relationship with a lover. He buys a new computer system which comes with an AI that talks to him (Kind of like Siri but even more intelligent and voiced by Scarlett Jo-Hanson) and they develop a relationship. The reason Her is amazing isn't it's rather simplistic story but it's character development, chemistry, and overall heartbreak. (As praised by Wall Street Journal,Slate,Salon, com) Her will make you feel and think something a lot of movies nowaday don't do.
Overall see this movie now.
Her is rated R.

Critics Consensus:The Hobbit:Desolation Of Smaug

Hi! We are Critics Consensus.  We post the regular critics opinion for video games and movies! Today it is the all new Hobbit 2!
The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey was sadly one of the bigger disappointments of 2012 (Hey at least it wasn't Resident Evil 6) partly due to it's lousy 48 fps gimmick and a mostly boring script. Now the new Hobbits out and it's getting way better reviews and that's not partly due to there being dragons.
The Hobbit's certainly not gonna be a great as we would hope to expect but it's definitely a good popcorn muncher. It's fast paced and doesn't feel like a middle part of a trilogy as Christian Science Monitor has said. The Hobbit's getting better and better ladies and gentlemen (at least we hope).
Overall see this movie.
The Hobbit:Desolation Of Smaug is rated PG-13.
